What is the field setup kit?

  • The mat and LEGO mission models  make up the field setup kit
  • All teams need to have access to a field setup kit – it is critical to the game
  • If you are sharing meeting times/space  with more than one team, you can share the field setup kit to save money
  • It is hard to share one table/field with more than 3 teams – it can be done but it becomes difficult, particularly as tournament season comes near
  • You can order the field setup kit ONLY after you have paid for your team’s registration, you have 2 screened coaches and while team registration is open – once registration closes, you will not be able to order a kit.   Supplies of the field setup kit are limited and if you delay in ordering one, you might not be able to.
  • Field setup kits are not sold to the public – only registered FLL Teams have access to one

How do I assemble the field mission models?

  • Instructions are posted on the firstlegoleague.org site
  • The instructions are in individual PDF files per model – usually hundreds of pages in total and in color.
  • If you are missing anything, please contact the LEGO Educational Division Customer Service number is 1-800-362-4308

When do I assemble the models?

  • Most teams have the team members build the field mission models as soon as it arrives
  • The building instructions are in individual PDF files – hundreds of pages in total and in color.
  • We recommend having a laptop or computer nearby and having the team look at the instructions instead of printing them out
  • It can take multiple meetings to get the full set of missions built
  • Be careful as there are multiple pieces that look very similar in size, color and function
  • The individual bags are packaged to relate to individual models
  • It is helpful to have “sorting trays” or something with an edge like cafeteria trays or sided cookie sheets to contain the pieces and not just on a table where they can roll off
  • It is a very good idea to participate in a scrimmage early in the season. One big reason is that it helps teams to have exposure to field mission models built by someone else.   It is so heartbreaking to show up at your first tournament in the morning and only then experience on the first game round of the day that all of your practice was done with incorrectly built model(s)!  It happens and it is so hard to see and experience.
